Heirloom Audio' latest production~ St. Bartholomew's Eve (A Review)

My Middlest son has enjoyed many of Heirloom Audio's Henty productions, and I was hoping that perhaps my Youngest would finally be ready to appreciate one of these historical fiction audio dramas, so I was looking forward to the arrival of St. Bartholomew's Eve

In the past I have held off listening to previous Heirloom Audio producitons with my youngest to due to some sensitivities and the fact that typical battle descriptions (and audio) would have bothered him, but I figured that he could handle most of what I'd heard in past reviews.  I decided to use this as some "audio/history" schooling overseen by Middlest (who is now 18) while I drove to pick up Eldest from college for fall break, so I put it on the iPad for them to listen to, and I popped the CD's in the car so that I could pre-listen in my early-morning driving (You might recall that I listened to Heirloom Audio's Wulf The Saxon on my way to PA last February, these long, solitary car trips being a good time for *me* to listen).

Well, my friends, I'm afraid that I have a very different review to write this time. While the cast is still amazing, and the production is incredibly professional, this time I felt it really was too much. For family-friendly listening, I expect some of the violence to be tuned down, but in this instance, it appears that Heirloom Audio actually dialed it up.

After listening through a fair number of tracks I sent a panicked message to my son, telling him to remove the audio drama from the iPad, and to NOT listen to it with my Youngest. Why would I do such a thing? I freely admit, I avoid horror, and I tend not to watch heavy drama and shows with major battle scenes myself, but I can generally stomach most things termed "family-friendly." I understand and appreciate the value of the themes of honor and bravery, etc... However, by the end of this story, I was feeling bothered and queasy due to a number of scenes and themes, for quite some time after as well.

I was bothered enough that I later downloaded a free version of Henty's St. Bartholomew's Eve and skimmed through it, doing some word searches from particular scenes. While there is still some violence (This *was a terribly bloody uprising against the Hugenots), the actual Henty version is not nearly as graphic as the audio drama in my opinion. In fact, one of the storylines in the audio drama that bothered me centers around a young lad (11 or 12 years old, so right at my Youngest's age), but when I skimmed/searched the Henty novel, there was no mention of this boy. It would appear that his character was thrown into the plot mostly as a gratuitous emotional string to pull, which I really do not appreciate at all. Additionally, the use of Martin Luther's "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" is another instance of adding to Henty's work something that was not in the original and adds to the gratuitous flavor of trying to push a point that wasn't original to the story (It is integral to the non-Henty storyline of the aforementioned boy).

I don't believe that the age range is appropriate for this particular recording. I do think it could be a good supplement to a high school, or even college course covering this part of history. It could open up the opportunity for discussion about the dangers of Mob Rule, which is history we appear to be close to repeating, as well as the excellent character traits of the two main characters, who behave very bravely, with humility, and wisdom. But in my opinion, this is NOT suitable for young children.

That being said, it might be time for me to pull out some of my older Henty Audios for my Youngest to listen to. I think he would be fine with most of them now (although I will double-check with Middlest on the ones that he mainly listened and I only skimmed through, to get his opinion).
Here are those titles, and my reviews for you to consider:
Wulf the Saxon
Captain Bayley's Heir
In the Reign of Terror (might wait a bit on this one as well)
The Cat of the Bubastes
Beric the Briton
The Dragon and the Raven
In Freedom's Cause

I hope in future that Heirloom Audio will return to sticking fairly close to the Henty stories when they write the screenplays and consider toning down some of the audio violence if they really want to reach families. Not all of us have our media tuned in to the graphic blood, guts, and horror that are so prevalent today (some things are better left to the imagination...).

Heirloom Audio Productions: Wulf the Saxon (Audio Adventure Review)

Heirloom Audio Productions, as you should know by now if you've read my blog for any length of time, puts out an incredibly high-quality series of Audio Dramas utilizing the works of G. A. Henty. In the past, my Middlest has been the main audience for these CD's, but this time around I brought along the newest offering, Wulf the Saxon Audio CD, with me to keep me company on one of my 7+ hour road trips to pick up my Eldest from college.

The actors are all highly regarded in their field on stage and screen, including Brian Blessed (Star Wars, Tarzan, King Lear), Chris Larkin (Master and Commander, Valkyrie), Helen George (Call the Midwife), Jack Farthing (Poldark), Sian Phillips (I, Claudius), and Patrick Godfrey (Les Miserables, Ever After). The Soundtrack Score by Emmy Award Winning Composer John Campbell only adds to the compelling telling of a heroic tale of bravery and honor as we meet Wulf the Saxon.

The two and a half hours I spent listening to this story sped by rapidly, as I journeyed through England and France while driving through New Jersey and Pennsylvania. This tale of battle and bravery will likely be long connected with the hills and folds of the land I traveled, as I imagined them taking place where I drove.

I don't know how your High Medieval British history is, but mine always does better with a little brush-up of "story" to help me hang my hat on some of the details, and if that works for me, I'm thinking it works for our kids as well. My main brush with a timeline of English facts dates back to my high school English Composition class, which really was a History of England class, disguised as a literature class (our final was to fill out a timeline, and it wasn't all literary...), so I appreciate when I have the opportunity to add facts that will help my memory.

This story follows the adventures of Wulf, a young Saxon landowner, as he learns to care for his land, his people, and his country. It highlights the relationships of the warring English amongst themselves and also to the Normans. There were those within each country as well as across borders that were friendly and others which were treacherous.

Wulf grows from a cheeky young lad in the care of a lord to a young man who has learned respect and gained respect. He shows courage, ingenuity, and faithfulness to friends both new and old as he navigates the murky waters of Saxon and Norman tensions.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this well produced historical fiction account, and the next time someone mentions The Battle of Hastings I might even remember in what century it took place ("story" is the key!). I will note that for those with "sensitive" children, as with all Henty books, there is some form of "violent" adventure that takes place, in this case the sounds of battle, so use some discretion with the recommended age of 6+.

I will also note that in the past we have been given access to Heirloom Productions Study guides and ebooks, but this time we were sent only the physical CD. In my last review of Captain Bayley's Heir, we were given access to the new Live the Adventure Club Website, and you can check that review out to see more details. I can tell you that the Live the Adventure Club includes all the bonus materials you need to expand this two and a half hour CD set into a Unit Study for multiple ages.

Captain Bayley's Heir (Another Fantastic Heirloom Audio Production)Review)

Following fast on the heels of my most recent Heirloom Audio Productions review of In The Reign Of Terror, is this review of their newest title, Captain Bayley's Heir. This story mainly follows the adventures of a young English lad named Frank Norris.  Frank is falsely accused of theft, and upon his notion that his guilt is believed true by those closest to him (due to extreme circumstantial evidence), he heads to America, and California's Gold Rush Country. His hope is to return a rich man, with the ability to prove his innocence.  It also traces the circumstances of Frank's family~ his Uncle, Captain Bayley,  his cousin, Fred Barkley, and his "adopted cousin," Alice Hardy as events occur back in England.

As to the title~ there is some question throughout the story as to WHO, exactly is (or will be) Captain Bayley's heir, but you'll have to get nearly through the entire story to find out the answer to that question. ;)

So, to backtrack a tiny bit, if you haven't read any of my previous Heirloom Audio Productions Reviews, I received in the mail a 2 disc CD audio production (Radio Drama-style) of G. A. Henty's story Captain Bayley's Heir. Along with the physical CD, I was given access to the Live the Adventure Club Website, which offers bonus materials to go along with the CD, plus a whole lot more.

Live the Adventure Club is a unique subscription service. It offers:
  • Three physical products shipped to your door per year (New Henty Audio Dramas, as they are produced)
  • Educational Treasures and Teaching Resources which include Study Guides produced for those CDs, as well as History and Grammar Textbooks from the 1700s and 1800s
  • The Ability to Stream over 500 Old-Time Radio Shows
  • Listen and Learn Read Along Program
  • Daily Inspiration and Devotionals
  • Hundreds of Fun activities and Games
  • Full Access to Live the Adventure Radio
  • Community Forum to exchange ideas and tips
I will mention right here that there is a 3-Month Free Club Trial being offered (at the time of posting) with a deeply discounted $1.00 purchase of the 2-CD set of Captain Bayley's Heir, as well as $20 worth of Adventure Credits to use in their online store. That seems like one of those deals that is too good to pass up, in my opinion. ;) Be sure to check that out after you read the rest of my review.

Now, I want to tell you a bit more about the Adventure club features as they relate specifically to the Audio Dramas.

There are some online options for younger listeners that include coloring pages, word-searches, and other activities that relate to the time period of various audio drama productions. The word-searches can be completed online, or downloaded and printed. The letters can be reduced or enlarged in size to suit your child's needs. That's pretty cool attention to detail!

Coloring Pages
Word-search
The Listen and Learn Along Program offers the ability to listen to each chapter of audio while reading along with the script (With each word highlighted as spoken in the color of your choice).

Following the audio portion, your child can then take a listening/reading comprehension quiz to earn points towards an adventure badge. There are also more questions that offer the opportunity to think more deeply about the text, and what the character's motivations are, or what they might be thinking to cause them to act in a certain way, or say certain things.

At the end of those deeper questions you will find a number of vocabulary words that are defined as you mouse over them. Sadly, I couldn't capture a screenshot while mousing over, but it does work nicely. ;)

This portion of the website is the multimedia version of the pdf Study Guides that I've mentioned in the past. These are still available as part of the Educational Treasures found on the website, if you prefer to have something to print and bring with you, or if you have limited internet access, are traveling, or what have you. Here are some screenshots of the pdf study guide.

The study guide still includes the comprehension questions (Listening Well), the digging deeper style of questions (Thinking Further), and the vocabulary words (Defining Words). It also includes some other interesting tidbits that Expand Your Learning with information that correlates to the story. At the end of the study guide you will find a list of extra reading resources for further expansion on the historical time presented, as well as 3 Bible Studies That focus on some of the themes in the story. In Captain Bayley's Heir the Bible studies are about:

  • God's Grace
  • Becoming A Christian
  • Honoring Your Parents

They each include a number of statements, followed by Scriptures that back up those statements, and can provide a good opportunity for discussion.

This brings up something else~ in my last review I mentioned that I was disappointed that the ability to download the mp3s of the Audio Dramas was no longer an option, as that made it more difficult for my son to listen to the audio while traveling. I am happy to report that they are once again available as a downloadable zip file, and I appreciate that as the convenience it truly is.

I am happy to say that this audio drama has lived up to my previous expectations, and the Live The Adventure Club as I mentioned, is a unique product, that I expect will be enjoyed by many households due to the vast number of resources and value that it offers.

In the Reign of Terror ~ Heirloom Audio Productions does it again ~ (AnAudio Drama Review)

Once again, Heirloom Audio Productions has come up with another stellar presentation of a G. A. Henty novel, In the Reign of Terror. My Middlest (Being the audio/Henty fan in the family) listened to this book while we were on a lengthy road trip, learning a little bit more about a terrible time in history. As always the production and cast are incomparable!

The story revolves around a young man (Harry, a 16 year old English boy), who is something of an exchange student to France. He was to be a bracing influence on the sons of the aristocratic family with whom he was to reside, while receiving a good French education himself. His father believes in the humaneness of those involved in the French uprising that was gathering speed, and is sure that Harry will be as safe there as he might have been during England's civil war. He had no idea that the French Revolutionists were only guided by a humanistic viewpoint that would allow the godless Reign of Terror to take place, throwing entire families into danger.

Harry finds himself struggling to help his hosts escape sure death, with some degree of success. The story is of dark and dreadful days, and just as with Joseph in Egypt, what man intended for evil, God intended for good, but it wasn't easy, or entirely happy endings.

While I personally don't feel the story is appropriate for those under 12 due to the gruesome concept of the guillotine and violence of the French Revolution in general (we're protective in my household), the story itself is not gratuitous in its violence, and many families may find it acceptable fare for ages 8+).

Bonus content for Audio Club Subscribers

In the Reign of Terror Original E-Book Download
Once again, a beautifully produced ebook version of the story, with a colorful background. *One thing I appreciate about pdf ebooks is the ability to search a specific word or phrase, if there is something one wants to locate in the text!

Official Script Download
A new feature that is interesting. It allows the ability to compare and contrast between the book and the script, showing what it takes to move a story from text to audio production. Kids who enjoy theatre will probably love this feature!

Study Guide and Discussion Download
As in previous reviews, my high-school-aged son did not use the study guide, as it is intended more upper elementary/middle school use, but I do want to give you an example of how it is laid out.

I especially appreciate that it shows precisely what part of the audio book each portion covers. The screenshot below shows that this page deals with disc one, track three, minutes 9:34-13:34.
Each set of questions has three parts:

  • Listening well (Comprehension questions)
  • Thinking Further (Application questions)
  • Defining Words (Vocabulary)

There are also sometimes

  • Expand Your Learning (Background Historical Details) sections

At the end of the study guide there is a page of extra book resources (Especially suitable for older students), three Bible Studies (When God Means Evil for Good, Resistance to Tyranny, True Manliness), and further historical background, including a compare/contrast of the French Revolution and the American Revolution.

Listen Online Playlist
(This is a change from previous reviews when MP3s were available to download directly to an MP3 device. I actually found this more difficult, as my son was listening on a road trip, so didn't have access to wifi~ we had to download the tracks to my computer and then have him listen on that (thank heavens for power inverters that allowed my computer to be plugged in to the car while traveling), or upload them to his phone. Either way, I personally did not find this to be a positive change. :( )

Official Soundtrack
Again, a change from before~ no longer a downloadable option, but "listen online"  ~ great if you have wifi, not so great otherwise (We have very limited data on our phones).

Downloadable Cast Poster and "Inspirational Quote" Posters
Downloadable Desktop Wallpaper

If you simply purchase the CD set, Heirloom Audio Productions does still maintain some free resources including timely and inspirational articles/posts, free downloads of the study guides for each book, and a kids' corner with a variety of activities and printables.

Here's a little bit more about their new...

AUDIO ADVENTURE CLUB(<--- check="" click="" here="" it="" out="" p="" to="">This is set up as a subscription service (similar to Disney's Movie Club).
They are currently offering a $1.00, 90 day trial ~ (After the trial period is up the plan charges $24.97 every three months, and guarantees that three new physical CD sets will be sent three times per year as they are produced) this gives you the 2 CD set of their newest title (not yet available to the public) Mr. Bailey's Heir and access to many MORE resources including the bonus features mentioned above.

Some other resources include

Old Time Radio Vault~ here are some of the programs that can be accessed online

A full Crash Course on the Constitution

Discounts on previously produced Audio Adventures ($24.97 each), Daily Devotionals and "This Day in History," Educational Treasures, including rare history and grammar textbooks from the 1700s and 1800s, and even more resources and articles.

Another G. A. Henty hit! The Cat of Bubastes (Review)

My Middlest was delighted when a package from Heirloom Audio Productions (HAP) arrived at our door with their latest offering (and the first Henty book I had ever read ~ as well as one of the first e-books I had ever read), The Cat of Bubastes audio drama. He thoroughly enjoys listening to these Audio Dramas, with exceptional actors and actresses.
*I* was delighted, because this went along quite nicely with our start to World History, Ancient History being a subject we have only lightly covered in the past.

The story follows a prince (Amuba), who is sold into slavery when the Egyptians conquer his father's kingdom. Through the story we learn about Egyptian culture, customs and religion, a major aspect being that the Egyptians highly regarded cats, and killing a cat was punishable by death, even if it was an accident...

Heirloom Audio Productions always puts out an amazing product, with highly regarded actors and actresses, as seen above. The Extraordinary Adventures of G. A. Henty will rival any audio drama for professional and riveting production. See my reviews of other Heirloom Audio Productions: In Freedom's Cause,  With Lee in Virginia, The Dragon and the Raven, and Beric the Briton. As you will see, we have found them all to be first-rate.

Study Guide Printed and bound
Although my son did not use the Study Guide (which is geared more toward the middle school ages), I want to take a minute to mention a few things, because I really like the way this particular guide is set up.

  • I discovered a detail I missed in other HAP study guides (although it is there, I just didn't notice it right away): The section of the story for each chapter in the guide is clearly listed and includes the disc and time stamps for the portion of the story being reviewed. Very helpful when your child wants to go back and listen to catch details they may have missed.

  • I also enjoyed reading the "Expand Your Learning" notes on many of the pages that gave background on some things that are not obvious, but add to your understanding of the culture in which the story takes place.
  • While every chapter/lesson doesn't include an "Expand Your Learning" note, they do all follow the same format:
    • Listening Well (Comprehension Questions)
    • Thinking Further (Deeper discussion/application questions)
    • Defining Words (Vocabulary).
At the end of the study guide there are some extra pages, which are also useful and interesting.
  • More on Ancient Egypt book suggestions and resources
  • Bible Studies
    • Bible Study 1 "God Meant it for Good"
    • Bible Study 2 "The Knowledge of God"
    • Bible Study 3 "Idolatry and Tyranny"

Here is a screen shot of the e-book from my computer screen. This works very nicely on the computer~ you can zoom in to make the text fairly large (For those who might require reading glass... ahem..). I did find that if I zoomed in, the pages refreshed in their entirety once I reached the end, but if I used "Zoom to fit" the text scrolled seamlessly, and the background remained static.
I personally found that reading the ebook on the computer screen worked better for me than the pdf on my iPhone, as there wasn't an easy way to enlarge the text and I had to scroll around the screen, just as an FYI.

A word about the Live the Adventures E-Newsletter (Available as a bonus with the 4pack purchase). It includes a Kids' Corner with hands-on activities and printables for all of the Henty stories that have been produced, Parent resources (inspiring and motivational blog posts), and more.

For a little taste of the quality as well as some behind-the-scenes action, you can watch the trailer here, or directly on their website.

Beric The Briton: A Review (Heirloom Audio Productionsdoes it again!)

If you've been reading my blog for very long, you will have likely run across reviews for
a variety of Heirloom Audio Productions  G.A Henty dramatizations: The Dragon and the Raven, With Lee in Virginia, In Freedom's Cause, in fact, the only one in the series that I have not reviewed is Under Drake's Flag. My teen son has greatly enjoyed listening to these audio dramas (He prefers that to reading them, in part because he loves listening to the fantastic voices of the actors), so he was greatly pleased that we were recently sent Beric The Briton for review.

We were all impressed with the cast line-up for this particular drama, as it includes the following greats:
Brian Blessed (Star Wars, Tarzan, King Lear)
Brian Cox (The Bourne Identity, Braveheart)
Tom Baker (Dr. Who)
Honeysuckle Weeks (Foyle's War)
Cathy Sara (Downton Abbey)
John Rhys-Davies (The Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones)

Nothing makes a good story come alive so well as amazing actors and voices!
After listening to some of this audio, my son mentioned that he remembered placing specific Minecraft tiles while listening to specific conversations. I love that sort of memory recall, just another benefit to listening to audio presentations. :)

I'm not going to go majorly into the storyline, other than to say that contrary to what the title might suggest, it is mostly set in Rome during the time of Nero. What I will say is that once again, Heirloom Audio Productions has presented an A+ Class production, with quality actors, musicians and recording. Beric the Briton harks back to the times of the radio dramas of yesteryear. Days when children and parents used their imagination to fill in the visuals for what they were listening to.

I also want to briefly mention the bonus study guide. While the study guides tend not to be geared for high school students, they is some additional historical context information included as well as some discussion questions that can be of benefit for the entire family.

I also want to mention the "Family 4-pack" purchase option. This is a great idea for a gift, AND one of the other bonus items included in this pack is a pdf e-book of Beric the Briton, delightfully formatted by Heirloom Audio Productions. This should give you an idea of what it looks like ~ nice, no?

If you spend a lot of time in the car, listening to Heirloom Audio Productions' audio dramas can be a great family bonding experience. It is also a good fit for those who are auditory learners, and an exercise in using imagination for everyone!
