How to be the sharpest knife in the drawer

The past couple of weeks I had a number of "Iron Sharpens Iron" messages in my inbox, so I thought it behooved me to share them with you. Great post to restart my blog with, after a more than 1/2 year hiatus!

Sally Clarkson shared a post that resonated, and although it feels like she was talking more about "girl" friends ("Girls Club"), the message holds true for all friends...

One of the devotionals I look at (Student Devos ~ Because all my kids are still students) also posted about choosing GOOD friends who will help sharpen character and integrity, not mediocre or "bad" friends who won't help growth at all and possibly even cause some damage (which isn't to say don't hang out with those who don't align with your faith/ideals/character, but don't spend the better part of your time with them).
Watch what you're "sharpening" with... so that you don't become blunt, or even slightly dull from lack of use.

Then I read an interesting article on theartofcharm.com  (not a "Christian" site per se, but most of the points were solid, somewhat ironic given that "Charm is Deceitful" ... ☺) starting with the quote
“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
and ending with the advice to
"Choose your friends wisely and surround yourself with excellence.
Find the people who elevate you.
Choose the events that inspire you.
Embrace the habits that improve you."
These are all themes that are Biblically sound!
In between, the article discusses a number of studies that corroborate those two points, and some of the psychological hows and whys, for those have a more secular bent.

I am reminded of a time in my life a number of years ago when I had a friend who was frequently negative, talking about things that weren't uplifting, criticizing and complaining much of the time and I noticed how weary I was and I didn't like the way I was beginning to view and relate to the world. I then had the opportunity to visit a new friend for an afternoon, and the contrast was eye-opening. When I left her home I felt refreshed, renewed, and revitalized, simply because the conversations we had were positive and encouraging. We didn't necessarily have any deep discussions that day, but just the general tenor of our visit was uplifting.

When spending the majority of time with those who are engaged in behaviors that are not beneficial, and do not help to build good character and integrity (rude conversation, constant sarcasm, tearing down of others, foul language*), some of which can be harmful to health (vaping/pot-smoking/drinking all come to mind, there are others as well), it is very likely that the behaviors will begin to be accepted as normal, and possibly become behaviors that are engaged in, not just observed.

When the majority of  *quality time is spent with those who concentrate on whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable (Philippians 4:8), *those are the characteristics that will be reflecting God's love and drawing people to Him.

So as a new school year starts, as new activities begin, and even as some acquaintances/friendships are renewed, be wise. <- and="" as="" dads="" for="" just="" kids="" moms="" need="" not="" p="" reminders="" the="" these="" we="" well="">
Choose to spend time with those who will lift you up and bring you (and subsequently those around you) life.

Blessings~
*side note~ Christians are often singled out as being hypocritical, but that is not a trait that is limited to Christianity. The phrase *be kind*  has become a recent slogan in popular society. That is a good thing! However, I find it very difficult to take people using/espousing it seriously when their speech is filled with 4 and 5 letter foul language, particularly when two of the most common relate to violent and derogatory speech towards women~ not exactly *kind.

Nuggets of Gold (New music by Chris August, and Jonny Diaz ~ Could June get any better? Keep reading...)

Ay-yi-yi! I wanted to post this earlier!!!

Chris August has a new album out, and New Release Today is offering one of his songs for free download till the 14th. Go download "Worry" from the album "Seasons."
You're welcome. ☺

(And in case you want to listen before you download... )

Probably my favorite song on the album is "Moonlight"~ this is sooooo gorgeous!
The musicality and intricacy is fantastic!

As always, Chris August delivers...  ☺

As I mentioned in my title, Jonny Diaz has new music~ an EP "Sweetness and Sorrow"

He says this is the song that resonates with him the most...
(Listen all the way through... ☺)

Oh, and Steven Curtis has a new song out also!! WOOT!!!

I missed sharing For King and Country's new song that released in May...

This is a fun, rather retro (MTV-style?) music video~
We always have the option to

CHOOSE JOY!

And if you prefer a less stylized/concept video, and want their live "energy," here is a unique single shot video from a concert in Florida...

One more thing to keep an eye out for...
Unspoken has a new single coming out on Friday! I don't have a link or any further information, but you know it will be good! ☺
And Francesca Battistelli has a new song coming out on Friday as well...

So, I hope this gives you some things to listen to, and some new music to pick up, starting with that free Chris August tune.
Blessings~

Musical Nuggets of Gold (Free Downloads for a limited time)

Time for a few Nuggets of Gold! It's been FARRRRR too long since I've written one of these posts!

New Music for the weary soul is available for download!

First up, from Free CCM

The latest is Micah Tyler's Directions from his Different album. If you listen to Christian Radio, you've probably heard his song Never Been A Moment, which was nominated for a Dove Award. He was one of our favorite sounds of the summer of 2017. ;)

The other two songs available on FreeCCM are pretty diverse~
Stones by rapper/rocker Manafest

and collective Pyramid Park's Born to be Brave
Confession~
Even if I didn't like the concept/lyric much, I might listen to it for the accents... ;)

Another of my favorite places to check out new music is Hear It First, although it's difficult to know exactly what track they are offering for download until you actually download it from the link they send in your email... :p

Personally I wasn't a huge fan of James Gardin's Right Now~ seemed a little too ... needy... made bad choices, now he wants his girl back. :p If he's actually talking about God, well, this is one of those ambiguous songs that I like even less... (just so you know what you'll be getting before you hit the submit button~ you can look it up on Spotify if you want to check it out yourself. )

Fans of Audrey Assad may enjoy the very mellow
Wood and Nails on Work Songs: The Porter's Gate Worship Project~

Sandra McCracken Live can also be found on Spotify~ I don't know which song is offered as the free download on Hear It First as she wasn't exactly our cup of tea...

Won't Let Me Go by John Tibbs is a high energy tune...
You won't let me go
And I will not fear, when the earth gives way
And the lightning strikes, and the oceans rage
You'll stand by me, I'll never walk alone
You won't let me go

The Legacy Live PlanetShakers song Prophecy wasn't exactly what I'd listen to, but some might enjoy it, so I suggest looking it up on Spotify. :)

Armond Wakeup is a rapper/spoken word artist.
His mellow song Sweeter might be worth a listen if you're into that genre

OK, that's about it for now~ grab them while they are still around!!! And if you pick any of them up, let me know your favorites in the comments~ I'd love to hear from you!

Blessings~

Nuggets of Gold (A song for my coffee-drinking friends! + Other Music)

Hey!
Are you awake??
Need a cup of Joe?

How about an awesome new song by John Waller called "Awakening (the Coffee Song)" that is available for download from Hear it First. (You can preview any of these songs by listening to them on the embedded Spotify links, but if you want to download them yourself, you need to go to the underlined links).

There is also a song by Jai Velasquez, "God Who Moves the Mountains" that is worth a listen... (Same link as above~ where you can find a few other songs I didn't have a chance to listen to before I wrote this post)

You can also download MercyMe's version of "Come Thou Fount" from FreeCCM

And Landry Cantrell (New to me artist) has a free download on NewReleaseToday.com "Gravity"

Enjoy!

December Nuggets of Gold (Music and Books + Free videos and more for teachers!)

Hello friends~

Well, it doesn't look like that snowy globe just yet, but you never can tell! ;)

I hope that you've been enjoying the reviews and giveaways that I've had to offer on my blog in the past week or two. Entries are still open, so go take a look if you haven't yet!
There's one for a Bible Journaling Kit, and one for Amy Grant's new Tennessee Christmas CD.

Now, here's a nugget for everyone~

FreeCCM is offering a 10 song Christmas sampler, featuring Mercy Me, Sarah Groves, Laura Story, Phillips, Craig and Dean, and Phil Wickham. What a blessing, and generous gift ~ all you have to do is enter your email~ which allows FreeCCM to let you know when they have new free offerings. *Note: Downloads must be made to a computer.

And here are some Books for Kindle that you may be interested in picking up:

A Goose Creek Christmas (Tales from the Goose Creek B and B, book 4) (free at the time of posting) ~ I just read this book, and it is a sweet, funny story. Reminds me a little bit of the Mitford Chronicles, if you remember those... Although it's book 4 in the series, I didn't mind reading it on its own, and am interested in checking out the rest of the series.

A Christmas Carol (Wisehouse Classics with Original Illustrations) (free at the time of posting) ~ Don't really need to say much about this one ~ we all  know and love Dickens' Classic story, and now you can bring it with you on your Kindle! :)

Joy to the World: A Christmas Nativity Counting Book (free at the time of posting)~ Something to read to your Toddler when you are out and about~ Simple little illustrations just right for little ones. :)

Something for the teachers among us... public/private/homeschool...

Izzit.org regularly offers great teaching videos that promote critical thinking, and right now they have a special "12 Days of Christmas Giveaway Spectacular 2016" . You can get a FREE DVD each day, for 12 days!  Plus, they are randomly selecting one winner each day to receive a embroidered fleece blanket.
I missed the first day (yesterday), but please check it out now ~ Each day offers a new video, and a new code, good only for 24 hours (I'll be posting on my Blog facebook page with the codes, so you can just keep an eye out there, if you like).

And one more for the homeschooling teachers:
IEW has some free events and more:

1. This Saturday! December 10- IEW's Virtual Winter Retreat

Joining Andrew Pudewa are Sarah Mackenzie, Adam Andrews, and Jill Pike. There are six sessions that will encourage and inspire teachers and parents. If someone is not able to attend, they can still register to receive the recordings of the session they want to hear.

2. Twelve Days of Christmas Giving

Every year we celebrate the Twelve Days of Christmas by doing what we love to do: give gifts. Families can register now at the link below to receive daily email reminders to download the free gifts. On the final day, we ship something special to their front door.

I hope this brightens your week, and gives you something fun to enjoy!

Blessings~

National Parks Centennial (HAPPY 100th Birthday, NPS!!) (NuggetsofGold!)

Nothing like a major celebration to give me an incentive to post some photos from our road trip this summer. Be sure to check out the parks near you this weekend~

(Golden Nugget alert) From their website:

The National Park Service turns 100 on August 25, 2016, and we're inviting visitors of all ages to join in the celebration throughout the month! With special events across the country, and free admission to all 412 national parks from August 25 through August 28, the National Park Service is encouraging everyone to #FindYourPark for the centennial!

Beyond that, if you have a 4th grader, be sure to check out the "Every Kid In A Park Pass" that will give you and your family free admission to the National Parks for one year.
Youngest getting his first badge (and patch!)
At the FIRST National Park, Yellowstone
Happy Birthday, NPS!

One of my favorite features of the National  Parks is the Junior Ranger Program. The majority of them are offered for free (with a few exceptions, but the fee is nominal), your kids get a booklet, learn about the park, and receive a badge (usually) or sometimes a patch! Pretty cool!

Because of the 100th birthday, some of this year's badges were special editions
Note the two wooden badges in the middle photo and the metal badge between.
We were pleased to have the opportunity to visit some old favorites (from 2006), as well as some "new-to-us" visits!

We stopped by or "overlooked" a few more parks but didn't do any programs, sometimes because of the time of day (or night) we were visiting...

Nuggets of Gold (End of April... already? How did that happen?)

Some more Nuggets of Gold for you~

Music to download at New Release Today:

Found a really neat artist there this week~ The Gray Havens title track from their new album Ghost of a King ~ what an interesting sound and song! Hadn't heard of them before, but loving this sample of this husband/wife duo. I've been listening to their album on Spotify, and it is lovely, haunting, and memorable. You can listen to it here, but be sure to head over to New Release Today and download the track to listen to at any time. :)

Interestingly enough I really liked another title track offered (Hurry, it will disappear sometime next week, probably Friday!) by Phil Wickham from his new album Children of God.

and sisters Lauren and Brooke DeLeary together are Love Collide whose song Yahweh from their album Resonate: Ripple to a Wave is a pleasant listen,

You may enjoy some of the other songs being offered, but these are my favorites this week! :)

Noisetrade is offering a free download of a remix by Matthew Parker of Jonathan Thulin's Compass that is an interesting listen...

A couple of books that are "seasonal" and free on Amazon:
One of my favorite "discovered" children's author as an adult is Arthur Ransome of Swallows and Amazons fame. Here are a couple of sweet, shorter books, perfect little introductory reads.

I hope you have a lovely weekend!

Blessings~
