The premise is that Lady Alexandria Featherstone's parents have "gone missing" while on a surreptitious expedition at the request of the Crown of England. She is determined to find them, although the King has declared them presumed dead, and handed her guardianship over to the Duke of St. Easton. She cares very little about the Duke, or his guardianship, as he is an unknown entity, far away in London, while she lives in a dilapidated castle on the edge of nowhere.
In her ingenuousness, she heads off (on her OWN!) with the belief that she will be able to find her parents. Along the way she and the Duke trade a number of letters, through which they get to know one another to some degree.
Here is a trailer (Movie-style) that introduces the book~
My thoughts: This is a sweetly pleasant, sometimes humorous, wander through the English and Irish country-side~ the characters are fairly well developed, although the Duke leaves me shaking my head~ I don't quite understand his depth of feeling for Lady Alexandria after just a few letters. And as far as Alexandria goes~ oh my! What an interesting young lady~ she does not appear to be constrained by many of society's more's having been brought up in a secluded castle, mostly on her own, with very little parental oversight. She tells tales as convenience dictates, with very little thought as to where those tales may end up, and has no thought for her personal safety~ she is very naive!
The story ends abruptly, looking towards the next book in the series, where one hopes there may be some resolution. Personally, I prefer books to be complete in and of themselves, not ending on a cliff-hanger, even within series. However, because of that ending, I will be looking forward to reading more about the adventures/misadventures of Lady Alexandria, and her poor beleaguered Duke.
