Ginny Owens~ Get In, I'm Drivin' ~ Music CD Review & Giveaway

Ginny Owens' new CD "Get In, I'm Driving" is releasing today. We were blessed to receive a pre-release copy of the CD for review, as well as a copy to give away.

I was not familiar with Ginny Owens, in spite of the fact that she has been recording since 2000, and has sold over 1 million albums. I suppose this could be due in part to the fact that New England does not have many Christian Music Radio Stations, so we often only hear what we already know and purchase...

Ginny is a Southerner through and through, and her music is reflective of that jazzy, bluesy  "Big Easy" feel.
  • The title track Get In, I'm Drivin' includes a bit of Ginny's humor shining through (she's legally blind, so driving is NOT her thing), but is actually a serious song about who is driving our lives.... ourselves, or God? "If you want to take the ride of your life, then c'mon, get in, I'm drivin'."
  • Mystery of Grace is a little bit "Easy listening/Country"~ encouraging, empathizing "You are loved, you are precious, you are special in so many ways. You will find the joy that fills you, just give in to the Mystery of Grace". A gentle little song to cheer you up when you are feeling down.
  • Ginny started Before You Fly right after Hurricane Katrina hit, "The world is wide, You can’t crawl under it, you can’t climb over it, Baby, I’ve tried. And the water’s deep;"  but it took a number of years before she felt she could offer hope and reason to anyone else . She ended up singing the truth that we all face trials and triumphs and that the best way to handle them both is one day at a time, with the grace of God. This song has a great groove~ "Spread your wings in the sun, Don’t give up, there’s more to come. You will find when you try, You always fall before you fly."
  • Rain give me a nostalgic, shut-up-in-the-cabin-on-vacation-because-of-rain kind of feel~  "It looks like rain again, and I'm afraid the rain will never end". You know that rain is good and necessary, but sometimes it messes up your plans... I can see feeling like listening to this song when I'm in a little bit of a dreary mood. Just a little melancholy......
  • Joined at the Heart Sweet lullaby for a new baby~ lovely song for a baby dedication~
  • Better Off "Don't waste my time, cuz I've got better things to do than listen while you tell me all the lies are true. I'd be better of without you." "Kicky" little tune~ honest look at how some things/people are not "Good for us", and we are better off without them~ regardless of first impressions.
  • Lay it Down is another groovy tune that sings to those who are carrying a chip on their shoulders, the weight of the world...  giving the good advice to take the burdens you're given and lay them down at the feet of the One who is strong enough to carry them all. This is a favorite song for us. :)
  • Higher Ground is a Stevie Wonder song~ you might not recognize it if you are familiar with the original. Much less funky, much more introspective~ I really like this version a lot! I don't know that I would have been "Caught" by the typical cover, but this one gets play in our home. :)
  • Daughter of Destiny is a great empowering song~ not a typical "Girl Power" song, but one I'm glad to have my daughter to sing around the house~ she is beautiful, exceptional, powerful, because God lives inside of her~ calling her to be a daughter of destiny.
  • Better That Way ~ LOVE the feel of this song~ Slow and jazzy~ song that seems to be about carrying a little bit of a quiet torch for a celebrity~ that it's better to not be a part of that "fantasy world" but to enjoy it from the outside. :)
  • The Song Another "Nostalgic" kind of song about leaving the familiar behind, and heading to the unknown~ following "the song."
We have enjoyed getting to know Ginny Owens' music, and if you'd like the chance to hear some of these songs on your own stereo you have some options~ :) You can hear some samples on Ginny Owens' Website, and as of today you can Purchase Get In I'm Drivin' on iTunes.
